Documentary Photography & Storytelling by Sydney
Sydney, a Journalism graduate in 2018, has worked as a communications coordinator for a natural resources agency, lead photographer for a corporate company, and pursued freelance documentary photography. Driven by a passion for advocacy, her work shares the realities of life for people, animals, and nature through beautifully curated imagery and video.
Having lived near Navajo Nation for three years, Sydney’s work is deeply influenced by the effects of colonialism on both the people and the land as well as bringing light to female advocacy issues as well. She documents these issues with the intent to raise awareness and create meaningful change. Her passion for conservation started in the fields of Kearney Nebraska, documenting the Sandhill Crane Migration in college.

Freelance Work Around Navajo Nation
During the three years Sydney lived in Gallup, New Mexico, she was welcomed by community members to document not just their artwork but their livelihoods. The work captured during this time reflects the stories, cultures, and resilience of the people Sydney encountered, particularly the Native artisans and acquaintances of Navajo Nation.
Sydney approached this project with deep respect and care, ensuring that all photographs were taken and shared with the full permission of those pictured. As a photographer, she is always mindful of the ethical responsibility that comes with documenting lives and cultures. This work is a reflection of Sydney's effort to share the world she experienced, hoping others would see the beauty and complexity she saw.
More work from this time in Gallup is currently in development, continuing to explore the stories of the people Sydney had the privilege to learn from and photograph. The work displayed above was taken for a wildlife count in a helicopter with Navajo Nation.

Salton Sea
The Salton Sea has been deteriorating over the years due to water disappearing at a rate quicker than the amount of rain for that area. This area had plans to be a booming resort town but has instead turned into a reminder of deep rooted environmental and humanity problems.
